Building your Self Esteem

A lot of people are hard on themselves. It is always good to hear people say that they do not compete with other people because they only have to outdo their selves. This is a good attitude because when you focus on yourself, you develop at your own pace and you don not see yourself at a loser.

There are times though when this becomes negative because a person becomes too criticizing of himself or herself. There is no worst critic than yourself because once you believe in the negative self worth you put in your mind, you could easily crumble with whatever negative the world will throw at you. A low self esteem is one of the greatest enemies of a person because losing it is like losing oneself.

Before it is too late, let us focus on building self esteem. It is important always be optimistic. Most people you meet are cynical these days but there is no reason for you to join the crowd. Being optimistic means capitalizing on the good and positive. No matter how bad the situation or how things maybe so difficult for you, there are always good and positive things to turn to.

You do not have to lose touch of reality to be optimistic. You just have to learn how to deal with a sad situation with a happy disposition or a really bad scenario with a hopeful disposition. It should also not stop within yourself because you have to practice optimism to other people and ideally wherever you find yourself at.

Helping other people is also another way to build self esteem. You do not have to be rich to help other people so do not wait until you are a millionaire before you start being charitable. There are other things you can share with other people to help uplift their lives.

If you have a special talent like teaching then do volunteer work at your community school for the under privileged or be part of your church choir. Besides we all know how blessed are those people who give more that what they have. Sincerely helping other people will make you feel good of yourself after all you do not give away kindness because kindness always comes back to you and usually at a time you need it the most.

Do not be so hard on yourself. It is okay to dream big dreams. We are always told to reach for the top but set realistic expectations and goals for your self so that if you fail or if you lag behind your timetable you do not immediately feel so bad instead you look at ways on how to get back on track.

Try and try until you succeed should be your mantra and believe that you can do it. There may be people to help you but it is really up to you. The fact that you dreamed it, you are capable of achieving it because that dream cam from the inner whispers of your soul and you cannot deny yourself that.

Having self esteem is like having a self that is ready for whatever is ahead whether it is good or bad. Always in the end, you will be a success because you've got the best version of you.

Some Self Esteem Building Exercises

There are simply times when we feel so bad about ourselves. It can be caused by a lot of things. Heartbreak is one of the most common reasons for low self esteem and is often the case for people who lost their self to their relationship. For the people who are in love with their career, a demotion can kill their self esteem. Workaholics who get fired are the number one candidates of low self esteem.

Teenagers who devote their time and energy to finally getting that slot in the varsity will have a lot to work on their self esteem should they be cut from the team. Self esteem is anchored in a lot of things like the factors mentioned above but solely depending on one single factor is not good. A high self esteem should be gained by being able positive toward all aspects of life and not just one.

In case you are one of those people who are suffering from low self esteem or happen to know someone who is suffering from low self esteem then read on and maybe these exercises can help you in finding your way back to gaining that high self esteem. Let us start off with your self. The mirror can do so many things. How many times have we seen depressed people throw mirrors or throw something at mirrors to break them because they do not like what they see?

Many, many times I would bet. So let us begin with making sure that we like what we see in the mirrors. In this phase, physically looking good is very important so take the time to fix yourself. Take a trip to the parlor or to the gym. It is a must that you like and love what you see in the mirror because such fondness is a good way to start making yourself better. And when that is settled, look at the mirror every morning and say "I love myself" not because your narcissistic but because you love the unique you who have so much to offer to the world.

Have one day of fun with friends every week. Sometimes surrounding yourself with people is not enough. You have to have a day spent with really close friends wherein you do nothing but celebrate the "highs" of the week. Think up of something like the "snap cup" in the movie Legally Blonde and have a session every week.

Why every week? It is nice to always have something to look forward to every week. This exercise, aside from helping you keep your self esteem, will enable you to share a unique bond with your friends and together you will all grow up beautifully. Be careful not to over praise each other so make sure that you only give sincere and timely praises to each other.

Those are just two exercises you can practice to build your self esteem or to finally build a high self esteem. There are other ways but one individual practice and another group exercise should encourage you to get at least get started and then just keep on doing it until it becomes habit. You never know, when you are so good at it then you can begin to walk the talk and inspire others to do the same.

Self Improvement Books

If you're like many people, when it comes to bookstore shelves chock full of self improvement books or websites that have hundreds and hundreds self improvement titles to choose from, you may feel overwhelmed. How do you know a self improvement book is the right one for you?

First of all, determine the self improvement issue you'd like to work on. This will certainly narrow down your choices. Once you have the subject you want your self improvement book to focus on, it's much easier to choose a book that will help you with any self improvement topic you may have in mind.

You will also want to pay attention to authors. You want books on self improvement to help you, so you want to look for books by experts in their particular self improvement field. Famous self improvement and self help authors like Dr. Phil who have credentials and have written several books that many people have read are likely to be good choices. Be careful of self proclaimed experts, as these authors may give advice that isn't helpful at all, and even worse, can have a negative impact.

It also pays to read the reviews of self improvement titles you're interested in before you actually buy the books. Websites for the larger bookstores generally have reviews from both critics and readers that can be an immense help when you're choosing a book on a self improvement topic. As you read the reviews, look for not just ones where people say the book helped them but ones that said it didn't–and why. Use these reviews as a guide, but take into consideration that as the old saying goes, one man's trash is another man's treasure.

Buy shopping online, you can find many self improvement titles for bargain prices. So do some comparison shopping for prices as well as shipping fees for books on self improvement. That way, in many cases, you can get several self improvement titles for less than you would pay for just one!

Choose your own gifts

Everyone knows it feels good to receive gifts. It doesn't matter if they are expensive; they just have to be there. Gifts are an effective way of showing that we care for someone. Of course, the price matters less than the manner in which we give them.

Behind every good gift is someone who worked hard to make a good choice. The key to buying the perfect gift is thinking about the kind of message you want to send when the receiver opens it. If you remember his or her hobbies or vacation plans, etc., it means you really thought about that person and bought the gift exactly for that reason.

Another kind of person exists who loves to make presents and who buy a lot of stuff without a specific person in mind. They wait for the right occasion to surprise someone. Such undetermined gifts can be items such as a nice watch, a pen, a scarf, a planner or a CD. They are good gifts, and when you must attend an unscheduled party, you don't have to worry about what to buy. Some things to remember when picking gifts without a pre-determined receiver are to choose useful things that people often don't buy for themselves and to choose gender-neutral presents because you don't know whether it will go to a man or a woman.

Another thing about gifts wrapping them. Wrapping can be a major issue for a successful present. Although what's inside might not be too interesting or original, a nice box will make a difference. Be as creative as possible. If you can give only a keychain, put it in a bag full of his or her favorite candies.

If you have to go shopping for Christmas presents or other occasions when you must buy many gifts, divide them into three categories; family, friends and formal gifts for people you don't really care about but still must exchange gifts with. After you divide the categories, list the people who will receive the gifts, so that you know how many people there are and how much money you will need.

If you're don't know what kind of gift might be the appropriate for a certain event, remember that family members often like to receive personal things (new toothbrush, socks, clothes, etc.), friends appreciate humor, and people with whom you have a formal relationship might admire presents that demonstrate attentiveness and good taste.

Also, when shopping for gifts, don't forget that it is important to pay attention to details, such as the profession of the people to receive the gift, the colors he or she likes to wear and what size. Be efficient - if you're buying gifts for your co-workers, don't hesitate to buy the same thing for more than one of them.

Now all you have to worry about is your budget, but don't forget - the more you give away, the more you get.

Building self-esteem in teens

Adolescence is perhaps the most complicated in one's life. Although adulthood can be pretty complicated too, nothing can match the adjustments that we have to make during this period of "growing up."

In addition to the usual stress that physical changes and hormonal changes in the body give, adolescents also have to deal with changes in their social interaction with people. This is also the time or period in their lives when they will experience emotional changes. This is the time when most will first become aware of the opposite sex and maybe fall in love or have a puppy love.
In this period of great changes and upheavals, of scattered energies and differing emotions, a teenager's self-esteem becomes vulnerable.

Although self-esteem is basically developed in childhood through parental love and attention; Only the foundation is built in this period. The essence of one's self-esteem will be solidified during the adolescence period and of course all through adulthood.

This is the reason why it is important to develop a teener's self-esteem further during this period. Unfortunately, social groups in high schools and other social dynamics often lower their self-esteem. Below are some tips to help your teeners build high self-esteem.

Give them role models

Parents are of course their children's primary role models. This is acceptable when they are kids but let's face the fact that we can't really compete with younger role models that they are exposed to in the media. People like Lindsay Lohan and Hillary Duff seem more believable and more attractive to teenagers.

Although basically parents should still strive to become a good example to their children, they should also accept the fact that they cannot be their only role models for long. They need other role models who they can really identify with.

The role of parents now should be to help their teeners choose role models that are admirable. They should also be taught to differentiate the characteristics that they should emulate and traits that they should not. After all, role models are for guidance and not for copying.

Give them your trust

One of things that will help your child trust themselves and their abilities is for parents like you to trust them. If they feel that you do not respect them as individuals, they will not respect themselves enough to try to achieve things for themselves. If you do not trust them and if you do not have confidence in what they can do, how do you expect them to develop their talents and achieve greatness.

Trust is a complicated issue and most parents will become confused at how to achieve a balance. It is important that parents try though. Too many limitations and restrictions can curb their potentials but too lax may get them lost.

Give them their voice

The right to argue and to explain your side of the story has become only a privilege in most homes. This should not be. Parents also make mistakes. Before judging and imposing sanctions, it is important that you allow your kids to state their case and explain their actions. After which, judge accordingly.

Allowing them their own voice and their own opinions teaches them to think on their own and decide for themselves. Thus, they begin to trust their instincts and develop their self-esteem.

Self Confident People Make a Mighty Nation

Self-confident people generate money

Self-confident people are filled with optimism and positive thoughts. They have an "I Can" attitude towards life and think it is possible to do great things. They are an asset to the organization they work for as they can be given tasks that demand greater responsibility and accountability. They hence keep up the quality, which in turn helps their employers to reap greater profits and thus contribute to the well being of both employees and the employer. People like Bill Gates have contributed millions of dollars to the economies of their countries and have been involved in lots of philanthropic work worldwide as well.

Self-confident people generate jobs

Self-confident people are natural risk takers and have enough courage to pursue their innovative dreams. Self-confident people often work very hard for the dreams they believe in and often end up as becoming successful entrepreneurs. They create a lot of jobs for others by their innovative business ventures. Though Edison faced a lot of difficulties as a child, his mother ensured that his self-confidence did not die. She made all efforts to encourage him and see him become successful. Today GE started by Edison is one of the world's most competitive corporate organizations and is a hugely admired employer of thousands of people

Self-confident people make the nation self dependent

Entrepreneurs are a great catalyst of growth in any country. They do not sit idly waiting for the government reforms to come and pull them out. Instead they work out innovative ideas, which have commercial feasibility as well. They share the burden of the state by employing other people and giving them jobs. It saves the government lots of effort and money that could have been wasted in providing for the jobless youth. The money saved can then be routed to other developmental works for the benefit of all. The country does not need to borrow from the organisations like the World Bank and can deal with its developmental affairs independently.

Self-confident people present a better image of the nation

A nation of busy people conducting their day-to-day affairs is much better picture than having unemployed people taking on bad habits and creating a nuisance. Self-confident people are the face of any country, signifying optimism, hard work, determination and self-reliance. This helps the country to portray a picture of hope, dynamism, and growth to foreign investors who would like to conduct business activity and invest money in the country. This help create more and more jobs and a culture of hard work and achievement.
Self-confident people develop a habit of winning

Failure is an addiction and so is winning. It is just a matter of putting your efforts and thoughts in the right direction to become a winner and self-confident people do just that. A positive thought and self-confidence is what is needed to take an initiative, and a small achievement becomes the source of energy. This energy also gives a boost to the self-confidence of a person to take on a bigger leap and get successful. Thus every achievement breeds another initiative for yet another achievement!

Self-confident people help other people achieve their dreams

A person other than having the feeling of kindness and compassion for fellow human beings should also have enough resources or the ability to create resources to be able to help other people for the same. Self-confident people therefore are willing to give a helping hand to people and pull them up.

Self-confident people are an inspiration to others

Self-confident people succeed on both their professional and personal fronts. Self-confident people are respected and often spark others to perform as well and serve as a great inspiration for other people. People take a lesson from their struggles and their ability to turn failure into achievement.

Self-confident people strengthen the fabric of society

An idle mind is a devil's workshop. Self-confident people in a way save the society from the devil by being busy and involved in constructive activities. People tend to get inspired from self-confident people and the general atmosphere becomes that of hard work and achievement. Such an environment is conducive for growth and development and self-confident people should be given every credit for the same. This overall movement raises the overall self-confidence of the nation and makes it more competitive and a confident participant in the world economic scenario.

Building Self Esteem in Children

The only way for children to succeed is by building up one's self esteem. Those who have this will be able to achieve a certain ambition later on in life, which is something that could only happen with the support of parents and the teachers that molded the child.

The first signs of this begin the moment the infant is born. It is the smile that the parents have after seeing the child for the first time, the first words ever spoken, the time the infant is able to stand and walk without any help.

Parents may not know it but even during this stage, the child understands the acknowledgement being given usually that could be through words or signs of affection. So, one of the most effective ways of building self esteem is by constantly praising the children.

Some experts believe there is a danger when the parent does this often. There are two reasons.

First, the child will get used to the attention being given after something has been done. Parents are just two of the billions of people on the planet and the person will soon figure out that the words of praise being does not mean that much to the rest of society.

Second, the young ones are not always correct. Some bad things will be done and unless parents do something about it, the child will not be able to know the difference between right and wrong.

Part of building that self esteem then should also have constructive criticism. This means talking to the child and explaining the things that were right and where it went wrong. There are always different ways to approach a certain challenge and looking back, perhaps there was a better way to do it.

There must also be a balance here because although the parent has good intentions in criticizing each move, this can further diminish the one's self confidence as the child feels attacked again and again.

Parents do both not to create the child into one's likeness as God did when man was developed but simply helping the person become a productive member of society that has rules and laws that everyone has to live by.

The third way to help build self esteem in children is in the parents. The actions being shown by the mom or dad also play a part in the child's development. Those who curse often will be surprised one day that the child will do the same.

Although watching movies and television have a role in making this happen, parents are there 24 hours a day 7 times a week which is a lot more time than a one or two hour show can ever do to a child.

Parents have to be the ones to set an example. If either mom or dad did not have strong sense of self worth as a child, the kids should not suffer the same fate. These people are aware of the mistakes before and will rather correct or prevent this from happening so this won't happen to the next generation.

It is never easy to bring out the best in a child. There will be trials ahead and those who succeed can be proud seeing the son or daughter graduate from high school or college and instill the same qualities when these people will also have children.

Dealing with jealousy

Jealousy is an emotion that can have devastating consequences to a relationship. Jealousy is a negative emotion that many of us suffer from to some extent; it is a feeling of emotions such as anger, hurt, dependency and self-doubt. Self-doubt stems from a fear of losing something, when in fact we ourselves often make this reality by our behavior and actions through jealousy. So how do we take steps to dealing with the green-eyed monster when it rears its ugly head?

* Become independent - you should only truly rely on yourself and never develop dependency on one person, focus on developing self-independence and on what you have in life, not what you don't have

* Give yourself a confidence boost - treat yourself to a new hair-do, a day at the spa or a new outfit, do something to give yourself a boost in confidence. If your confidence is very low then attend a course on how to assert yourself

* List what makes you feel jealous - sit down and admit to yourself what makes you feel jealous, list them down and be open in your thinking, are they silly things that make you jealous? And do they really matter?

* Talk your fears over with the person - sit down and talk with the person who is causing you to feel jealous and let them know how you feel. Are they doing something intentionally to make you jealous? Or without realizing it? If the person truly cares for you then they are usually more than willing to make changes, especially if they didn't realize they were causing you to worry and feel this way

* Take a good and honest evaluation of yourself - being honest about yourself and admitting you might have problems with low self-esteem or self-worth can be an eye opener and is the first steps to changing your feelings

* Study the person you are jealous about - look at the person openly and honestly, figure out what you dislike about the person and what do you like if anything, about them? Ask yourself if you are being unrealistic in your thinking

* Don't magnify your feelings - unless the jealousy is severe or it has been with you for a long time then chances are it is only fleeting and can have occurred for many reasons, with any luck these feelings will pass over and your relationship will calm down. Until this happens try to keep your feelings under control and don't let them spiral.

There are many self-help methods that can be used to help those who suffer from severe jealousy, these vary from hypnotherapy courses, audio CDS, books and magazines, any technique which can be used to help relax and calm you down can also be helpful, particularly at those times when jealousy first strikes.

Ten Tips to Improve Your Self-Esteem

The best way to improve your life and earn the respect of others is to improve your self-esteem. This is not a very difficult task. All that it needs is good guidance. Here are ten tips that can happen when you improve your self–esteem.

1. You should surround yourself with people who are positive and supportive, and shun friends who are cynical and negative. This will generate a huge swell of positive feelings in you. You will respect yourself more, and your self-esteem will grow.

2. You should be clear about what you want to achieve in life. Set goals, and work for their achievement. To make your task easier, break your main goal into several smaller goals which are relatively easier to achieve. This will make the task of reaching your main goals seem easier. It will also give you a feeling of satisfaction whenever you achieve one of the smaller goals.

3. Always be positive about yourself and keep reminding yourself about your good qualities, your accomplishments and how you help your family, friends, others and yourself. Don't make the mistake of brooding over negative things, and never put yourself down.

4. Develop the ability to accept criticism about yourself, without getting upset or defensive. This will help you eliminate your weaknesses one by one. However, make sure that the criticism is constructive. Don't allow yourself to be overwhelmed by criticism that is cynical or meant to lower your self-esteem. This will be a great mistake, and do irreparable damage to your self-esteem.

5. We all need to accept the fact that we will fail from time to time. We should not let it get us down or to have too much of a negative effect on us. We should think that we have not been successful this time and that we will succeed the next time. This will help us to pull ourselves together and move on. Such an attitude will help us overcome the most difficult conditions.

6. Never compare yourself with others. This is the easiest way to feel inferior and lose self-esteem. It is much better to rate yourself on your achievements. Such an approach will give you self-confidence. At the same time it will make you feel better when dealing with your peer group.

7. Never put yourself down. Failures are like parasites. If you allow them to grow they will eat away your self-confidence, self-respect and self-esteem. The best is to push negative thoughts out of your mind, if you want others to treat you with respect. This can only happen when you project a positive exterior, even in most adverse situations. Make it a point to filter out all self-criticism.

8. Don't give in to bullies in your place of work or in your personal life. You must learn to stand up to them. This can only happen if you are assertive about your rights. Of course, this does not mean that you should pick up physical battles to make your point. On the contrary, you should exercise restraint and make your point in a dignified manner. This will not only make others treat you with respect but also increase your self-esteem.

9. You may be self-conscious and because of this you may avoid talking to groups of people. Try to approach groups of people and introduce yourself to them. Ask them questions about themselves and try to be genuinely interested in the answers. Listen carefully and attentively to what they say and respond to show your interest. Interacting with people will make you feel more relaxed. You will realize that it is easy to speak to groups of people and to relax by concentrating on what others are saying, rather than on yourself.

10. Self-esteem is also dependent upon the felling of well-being. A lazy person or a poorly groomed person will always feel inferior to a confident, smart individual. So, you need to take good care of your body. Remember, a healthy body is essential for a healthy mind.

How to Beat the Bad Day Blues

Whenever you have a bad day for whatever reason, what you need to do is think. Think hard, but not about the misery or the misfortune that has hit you. You may be of the opinion, of course, the unfortunate events or experiences of the day are going to haunt you, put you under depression and mental stress, drain your emotions of their usual energy, kill your enthusiasm for life and spoil everything that you hold dear in life. In short, your negative thoughts may make your bad day seem worse than it actually is. Undoubtedly, that will be the case if you surrender yourself to the consequences, not otherwise. If you take control, you can devise ways and means of beating the bad day blues.

Since negative thoughts and emotions tend to overwhelm you on a bad day, you must think of strategies that thwart them. Turn to vigorous physical work out. Or, take a long walk or go swimming. Or, just get out into the open and sit somewhere and observe the plants and trees and flowers or the sunset, if it is sunset time. Read a pleasurable book, watch a funny movie or do something that distances you from the bad day situation, preferably both physically and, more importantly, mentally.

The good times
Remember the good ol' days that enriched your life in the past, all the happy experiences that elevated your spirits and all those special friends and relatives who brought cheer and laughter into your life. Think of the good things of your life and be grateful for the blessings bestowed on you. Put against the bright light of your appreciation of all those better days, this single bad day or a small bunch of bad days will pale into insignificance.

Do not wallow in your bad moods and emotions because that is a sure way of plunging deeper into sorrow. A bad day will not become a good day by stewing over it. Remember that a bad day is just one passing day. It might have left a few scars on your mind and body but is important to remember that the pain is temporary. Time is a great healer. Today, just ignore the negative aspects of the day. Instead, look at the positive side of the bad event or happening that spoiled your day. Are there any lessons in it for your future? How can you avoid getting into the same or similar situation?

This does not mean that you start thinking about your purpose in life, your personal relationships, your career graph or your future on a bad day. The day is not suitable for taking any major decisions about your future life, because such decisions cannot be sound, given the dark background. Put off taking important decisions till a better day when you regain your mental poise and composure.

One simple formula that will help you on your bad day lies in the fact that your sorrows get divided and your pleasures get multiplied when you share them with your close friends or confidantes. You may try to overcome your bad day by discussing your problems with your close friends.

Any or all of these easy-to-adopt measures will be helpful in providing relief to you on a bad day.
